Hi again Karim. Danmotor closed in 2001. The Cosa was introduced in 1987 so perhaps they were made at Danmotor too. I believe the Cosa engine was more sporty but Vespa purists turned their backs on it because there was too much plastic and I believe there was a tubular frame beneath the bodywork. There was a model called 'Excel' in Indonesia which I think is unique to that country. It was very squared off with some lines that look like a Cosa. Maybe that's the one in my photo.

Hmmmm will have to add that place to our trip list Karim.... anywhere we see a vespa just brings a smile to our faces...and we like little out of the way places hence we love travelling through Indonesia not many tourists..well not where we go at least.!!

    Hi there

We spoke to a few very proud vespa riders while in Jogja and they all told us about the huge scooter club scene and how they have meets and big rides but interestingly enough as here in Melbourne there is a bit of a taboo about classic and moderns riding together...unfortunately we didn't see any clubs on their rides this time....

Hi Karim, the older rounded body models in the background are original Italian imports to Indonesia during the 1960s. However between 1970 and 2001 Vespas were manufactured under licence in Indonesia by Danmotor at a purpose built factory. Danmotor produced about 60,000 units per year. These scooters were also exported to Thailand, Argentina and Nigeria. Unlike Piaggio's unhappy ventures in India and Taiwan, the quality of Indonesian made Vespas is considered excellent. During the 1980-90s Indonesia was home to more Vespas than anywhere else in the world, including Italy. The models on offer had slight variations compared to those offered in the West. Its great to see so many Vespas still being ridden in Indonesia. The scooter club scene is huge and rallies can draw up to 3000 riders. New Vespas are now making an appearance there after an absence of many years. Best wishes, David
