This a beautiful short ride, trying to second guess Melbourne weather.

Leave from the Abbotsford Convent at 11 AM

We'll ride all the way up to Heidi keeping as much as possible to the old Yarra Boulevard road.. It still has many beautiful parts, and must have once been a fabulous journey before being cut by major road building.

Ride Map

We will arivve at Heidi Gallery of Modern Art at approximately 12 noon. Entry is $14.  If you haven't been for a while, a walk through John and Sunday Reed's Heidi II is still an interesting glimpse of a modern architecture of the 1960s.  And Sunday's garden, once attached to the original house, still thrives. The Gallery nearby has some wonderful examples of Australian modern art from the 1930s - 1950s and there are currently three exhibitions running.

There Is a cafe at the Gallery which serves reasonable food.

After the Gallery visit we will make our way south to Mailing Road in Canterbury  Rd for coffee. Ride finishing at aboout 3 PM.

  • Melbourne's history is just a moment in time (1835)... but what great heritarge our past artisans have left us. Regards Dennis

One of my favourite Heidelberg School paintings is Moonrise (1894) by David Davies painted along the Yarra flats a bit further upstream from Heidelberg near Templestowe.

Dennis - that road is very special, Just a forgotten piece of the old original boulevard, isolated long ago by bigger roadwords cutting across it. An original piece of Heidelberg - farmland, horses, bush - just as it was when the Heidelberg School went out to paint on a sunny afternoon decades ago. Let's hope it is never spoiled.

(Re potholes: well it's a Bali road!)

  • Marvelous Melbourne.... it's like a mosaic, just when you think you've seen it all, you turn the corner and discover hidden gems of wilderness in suburbs. Still thinking of Sunday not bad for a small ride, must have something to do with the company I'm keeping!! Loved the free soup/coffee Cheers Dennis

Thanks Julie and Greg for a nice relaxed day last Sunday. Something different - and putting over potholes was fun.

Gorgeous spring day today, thank you everyone who joined in this arty ride with a country twist.  Who would have thought there could still be green pastures and stockyards right near the heart of the city.  You all handled the forgotten road very well.  Heide Art Gallery was very exciting with some wonderful photos, minimalistic art and vege gardens that made us all envious well most of us...lol....  The sun shone, the laughs were a plenty and our meal back at Cafe88 in Mailing Rd was delicious.

Perfect way to begin many spring rides to come with the lovely people of VCoM.

Thank you once again... and I hope all the fathers had a wonderful fathers day.

    Cheers Julie

A feature of the ride will be riding down a long forgotten part of the Boulevard - very bad road conditions - pick your way through the potholes - but a wonderful part of Melbourne that still looks rural - as it was when the Heidi school went out to paint and capture the essence of the Australian landscape... we will stop there to experience and imagine - before riding on to the gallery
