Gippsland produces a quarter of the nation's milk supply. This two-day weekend ride will wander through the rich dairy country of South Gippsland using the rural back roads taken by milk trucks as they pick up fresh milk every morning from various milking sheds throughout the district.

Description
Don't expect any high speed runs as this ride will be led by an old wheezing classic scooter. However the genteel leisurely pace will allow photography stops, time to enjoy a beer or wine along the way and explore some townships. The route includes a section of the Grand Ridge Road with views both sides of the ridge and South to the sea. There are some sections of dirt road to add spice to the ride which help make it very scenic. We'll have a look at factories where milk is processed as well as old dairy farmers co-ops that have long closed and perhaps visit a cheese factory. Our overnight stay will be at an old pub in Leongatha, either McCartin's Hotel or the Art Deco Blair's Otago Hotel. On day two, our route dips down South as far as Innverloch, Cape Patterson and Wonthaggi for a bit of coastal riding. We'll visit Poowong, a hill-top hamlet North of Korumburra and the charming village of Loch. The total route is 515kms. Map and more details posted soon.

Meeting Points
• For those coming from inner Melbourne, Western or Eastern suburbs we'll start off from Mailing Road, Canterbury at 8.30am sharp. Our route to Gippsland will be via some very pretty roads through Upper Beaconsfield. We'll stop at Bunyip for a stretch and coffee around 10.15am.

 • Those who live in Southern suburbs may prefer to ride direct to Bunyip straight down the Monash and Princess Freeways and meet the rest of the group here at 10.15am.

 • There is an option for those who can't ride on Saturday to join us at Leongatha (134kms direct from Melbourne CBD) on Sunday morning but you'd need to start off early. We'll discuss this later if anybody is interested.

This is the last big ride before Christmas and I'm sure it will be a very enjoyable and memorable one. Some pics below taken along the route of the kind of country we'll be riding through, just like a vanilla double dollop buttermilk ice cream... yum!

Thank you for your comments on the Milk Run Ride. My admiration to all the brave hearts who committed to the ride in spite of such a bleak start as we faced rain which didn't let up until late in the day. I know how glorious those grassy hills look when bathed in sunshine so it was rather disappointing that just a week out from the start of summer and we got a winter's ride instead. Nevertheless the scenery was splendidly green and we saw thousands of beautiful giving cows. We are so lucky to live in a state which is a paradise for two-wheels. Thank you to the corner markers and to the tail riders for keeping us moving along through so many twists and turns and to those who got into the cheesy spirit of the ride and brought along milky treats to share. The performance art of Lisa's jiggling milk cartons was a hoot. Tufan's commitment to the club and its rides is amazing considering the extra distance he has to travel. Hope you connected to a ferry at day's end. So relieved that there were no mishaps on the wet roads - Trevor and Amy, what a great job you did two-up for two days along some rough old dirt roads. Sorry I can't join you all for the Club's Christmas party as I'm away for a few months. So best wishes for the season and a happy New Year. Looking forward to some fabulous (dry and warm) riding with the club in 2014. David
