Yeah well, while some might consider riding 3,950 kms from Perth to Sydney including long stretches of unsealed road across the Nullarbor in the late 1950s on a 4.5Hp Vespa with eight inch wheels a challenge, heck it hardly compares to one of our club rides last year to Lygon Street. The coffee was luke warm and bitter, remember? And we all thought we were going to die. And what was worse, the cafe had no Wi-Fi connection so we couldn't even facebook our friends about it. Now that's what I call a real adventure.

Seriously, what an amazing undertaking. Found this pic of the Highway in 1967 and the following comment.

"Crossing the Nullarbor in the 1950s and earlier via the Eyre Highway was a journey in which drivers literally took their life into their hands. Most of the road back then was at best an unsealed dirt track and roadhouses were few and far bewteen. Significant improvements were made to the highway in the 1960s and the WA Government had sealed the its sector right up to the SA border by the late 1960s. The last section of road to be sealed - around 200 kms of highway up to the state border on the South Australian side - was opened in July 1976."
