The Candi Desa of Old

This is Candi Desa in the early 1980s as it used to be where a large fresh water lake emptied into the sea between those two flagstones. They blew up the coral reef (where the waves are breaking in the background) to make lime for the building industry. Unprotected by the reef, the wide white sand beach soon washed away and the locals had to build retaining walls to stop their fishing village from disappearing. It was once just so perfect. The folly of man.
