An impromptu event for those interested in classic motorcycles.

When re-fuelling at Alexandra last year on my way to QLD, a man rushed across the road and thrust a poster into my hand. The Red Gate Classic Motorcycle Club of Alexandra is having a ‘do’ on Sunday 25 March and this was my personal invitation. Apparently they love mixing it with Vespas, a message confirmed just hours ago. Sorry about the late notice, but if you are free, your Vespa (particularly if it's a classic) is welcome and the following events are offered:

Egg and bacon rolls available at 8:30am. A ride out to Lake Eildon and the dam wall will leave at 9:30am from Davenports Auto Electrics opposite the town’s Caltex Service Station. The route along skyline Road offers splendid views of Eildon Lake. After coffee and donut at the Eildon Bakery, we ride back to Alexandra. At 11am a show and shine is organised at the Alexandra Showgrounds Cnr William and Grant Streets. A $5 BBQ lunch is available. Some prizes are offered to non-member bikes. One of the old vintage motorcycles on display will a 1926 BSA Velocette restored after being consumed by flames in the black Saturday bushfires.

Alexandra is about 120 kms northeast of Melbourne. It will take you about 2 hours 15 minutes to ride there. If you leave on Sunday morning then you would need to be away by 6:30-7am. The ride from Healesville through the fern forest and tall trees over the Dom Dom saddle to Buxton is magnificent. The other route is via Yea.

I will be riding up on Saturday and staying at the Shamrock Hotel in Alexandra. If anybody is interested is staying Saturday night in Alexandra, the accommodation options are:

Shamrock Hotel (a few rooms still available)

(03) 5772 1015

Alexandra Motel and Motor Inn

(03) 5772 2077

Alexandra Tourist Park

(03) 5772 1222

Yarck Hotel - just 17kms from Alexandra

(03) 5773 4226

Rubicon Hotel-Motel Thornton - just 17kms from Alexandra

(03) 5773 2251

If you want to attend, it’s probably best at this late stage to make your own way there but give me a call if you want to ride up on Saturday. We can ride back together after the event on Sunday. The weather over the weekend could be ‘interesting’.
