Today I did a quick 500-km reconnaissance ride to check out a couple of roads for our route from Albury to Melbourne when some of us will escort the Vespa Club of Sydney members who are riding down to Melbourne in January. My brother John accompanied me for the first hour to Buxton on his new 2nd hand motorcycle. At the age of 73 with creaky hips he has trouble getting his leg over. I told him he should have got a Vespa. Silly boy. It was a perfect sun-blessed morning. Leaning from left to right into the curves up and over Dom Dom saddle surrounded by the beautiful tree ferns and the tall cathedral forest was as sweet as it gets. How good are two wheels and the smell of the forest?
The planned route will take us through a region that our club has never visited before. The granite boulder country of the Strathbogie Tablelands. I rode as far as Benalla before heading home again taking in some of the beautiful roads that Julie and Greg discovered when mapping out the Ned Kelly Ride. Hayes and Boho Church Roads are enthralling with their magnificent avenue of white-trunked gums. It’s wonderful that you can transverse a chunk of Victoria (almost 200kms) entirely off major highways on pretty narrow roads many of which don’t even have line markings. Oh, and thanks Imam for the lend of your scooter.
So, if your Vespa has never been interstate before, if you are an experienced rider, have a reliable Vespa that can cruise near 100kms/hour and have enough stamina for several hours in the saddle then cross the mighty Murray River with your club. 18-19 January. Details here:
We have also organised a 1 or 2-day ride to escort the Vespa Club of Sydney on a section of their return leg home. 21-22 January. Details here:
