Hello fellow Vespa riders. I attended the club’s annual Walhalla ride for the first time in 2012. It was my 2nd weekend away with the club and I had a fabulous time. The Walhalla ride next weekend is the perfect event to enjoy the camaraderie, fun, frivolity and friendship on a weekend away with the club, not to mention great two-wheeled riding on carefully chosen back roads that meander through stunning scenery - a mixture forest, fern gullies and open dairy country with some great views.
If you have never been to Walhalla before, then you are in for a real treat. The remnants of a once thriving gold mining town with lots of history to absorb, are wedged in a pretty steep sided valley. The setting of the township is truly charming, especially with Autumn colours coming on. There's also a memorable Indiana Jones style train ride which weaves along above Stringers Creek crossing back and forth over several bridges. Makes you feel like a child all over again. It was part of the railway line from Moe that once serviced the town.
Banish all thoughts that your little Vespa won’t make it. It will! Walhalla is only about 215 kms from Melbourne with a similar return distance via a different route. We usually arrive at Rawson for our overnight stay around 2:30-3pm. The accommodation at Rawson is a hoot. A huge building with individual rooms, a common kitchen and lounge room - the former quarters for the workers who built the Thompson River Dam. A stroll across the grounds puts you in a bush pub with great food. You can either put your boots up and relax in the sunshine at the pub after we arrive, or come on a short David adventure ride to the Thompson Dam wall.
For those who haven’t done the Walhalla weekend ride before, it is highly recommended so come along for an unforgettable experience. Just mark your attendance here:
We sure have had some fun on this ride over the years David. If this doesn't get a few more on board then nothing will....thank you and members there is still time to sign up.
