Event Description

Mooo! This is a repeat of a 2-day weekend ride we did two years ago. We'll learn about Victoria's dairy industry as we meander through the rich rolling green hills of Gippsland which produces a quarter of the nation's milk supply. We'll look at modern milk-processing factories as well as the remains of old dairy farmer’s co-ops that have long closed. The scenery is simply stunning as we ride along rural back roads used by milk trucks that pick up fresh supplies twice daily from the various milking sheds in the district.

Ride Description

Our 490-km route includes a section of the Grand Ridge Road with glorious views both sides of the ridge and south to the sea. Some sections of dirt road add spice to the ride and help make it very scenic. Our overnight stay will be in Leongatha. On Sunday we'll pass through the hill-top hamlet of Poowong then wiggle our way along the picturesque Bass Valley Highway to Bena with it’s series of picturesque 1940s bridges. We’ll visit a cheese factory for a tasting and pretend to fill up our scooters with Mobilegas at the Artdeco Kongwak petrol station. Lunch is planned for Wonthaggi. We'll then climb back into the hills, catch a shimmering glimpse of Phillip and French Islands and take a coffee break in the charming village of Loch. There will be stops along the way for photography, to explore townships, a pause to enjoy local beer or wine and of course we’ll meet lots of black and white Friesian cows named Daisy. Bless their big warm wet noses. Mooo!

For those too young to remember, milk used to be delivered to our doorstep... by horse and cart! Here is a recording of a milk man made outside our house in 1965 <click here>

So dairy queens, get ready to experience the fun and social camaraderie of a weekend away with the club. It’s sure to be a very enjoyable and memorable one brought to you by Peters Ice Cream - "The Health Food of a Nation". Some pics below taken along the route of the country we'll be riding through to entice you - just like a vanilla buttermilk double dollop ice cream... yummy!

With a fabulous scenic ride coming up it's time to finalise accommodation for the Milk Run Ride. Our overnight stay on Saturday is in Leongatha. There are two options available in town. The Leongatha Motel and McCartin's Hotel.

Ride leaders usually organise accommodation. However this becomes a bit of a juggle when people drop out late or can't decide until the last minute. I'm happy to book accommodation for those who are confirmed attendees.

So far I have reserved 6 rooms at the Leongatha Motel (5662 2375).

Greg and Julie (refurbished Queen) $110

Jo and Noel (refurbished Queen) $110

David and Imam (refurbished Queen) $110

Pam and Noelene (twin share) $105

Belinda and Pete (twin share) $105

Leonie (standard Queen) $100

Options at McCartin's Hotel (5662 2050) are cheaper especially for singles:

En suite Double Room $69

Single (shared bathroom) $40

Double (shared bathroom) $60

We welcome some local Gippsland club members who will be joining the ride. I believe the following people do not require accommodation. Paul and Judy Stampton, Valerie and James Lang. Please confirm.

Les, are you able to confirm yet?

This is a great weekend away in the rolling green hills of Gippsland so please join us for a memorable ride - it's not too late for some milky fun.

Fine thanks!

Hi Michael, yes that's fine. Lunch on Saturday is planned for Mirboo North. We then head towards Leongatha which is kind of heading back towards Melbourne. From there you could use the South Gippsland Highway for a fast (2 hour) ride back to the city. David

I can't do the whole ride, would it be OK to start off from Canterbury with the group and then turn around at lunch time??  Thanks --

Hi S.G crew

as Bunyip is only 1/2hr ride from me I'll try and catch up for coffee at Bunyip to say hello..wont make the milk run...but a coffee catch up would be durable,Mike

Hi David, just checked and the Leongatha Motel currently has all rooms available for the Saturday night at this stage.  It offers a range of rooms configurations but average price would be $60 max per person.

All the might attends must confirm their participation a.s.a.p. so the booking of accommodation can be made.

Salamut siang David. Looking forward to another great W/E away. Pammy & I will share if that works. See you soon around the corner & up the hill

Valerie and James Lang will be at the 9:30 Gippsland crew breakfast at Biddy Martha's cafe and staying with the run until Mirboo North so we wont need accommodation. See you all at Bunyip!

South Suburbanites and Gippslanders! The Gippsland crew will meet at Biddy Martha’s Cafe at 9.30am for a catch up coffee and quick breakfast before joining in the Milk Run. Come and join us before the ride, for part or all of the event, or just a coffee! We’d love to see you there! Great opportunity for new members and those thinking about becoming part of VCoM to see what it’s all about :)
